Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to 60,000 Eligible Employees Amid AI Spending Push

Microsoft has announced that it was offering voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 eligible employees as it adapts its organization to changing business needs and the growing role of artificial intelligence.

The program covers eligible staff in participating teams in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India at internal level 70 and below, according to Grace O’Donnell’s report for Yahoo Finance.
The figure represents the number of employees reportedly eligible for the offer, not the number of positions Microsoft plans to eliminate.
“The Voluntary Exit Offer reflects an important part of how we're evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter,” Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief people officer, wrote in a memo to employees.
Microsoft said the time-limited program would provide eligible employees with financial support and career-planning resources.
Participation is limited to selected teams, with eligibility varying according to each organization’s business priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs.
The announcement follows an earlier voluntary retirement program introduced in 2026. Microsoft has also undertaken separate workforce reductions as it reorganizes parts of its business and reallocates resources.
The latest offer comes as the technology company commits substantial funding to artificial intelligence infrastructure, including data centers and computing capacity.
Microsoft’s reported capital-expenditure forecast for calendar year 2026 stands at approximately $175 billion, according to Reuters, reflecting the scale of its AI-related investment plans.
Investors will be watching Microsoft’s quarterly earnings announcement on Wednesday for updates on spending, cloud-computing demand and Azure’s growth.
The results could provide further insight into how the company plans to balance infrastructure investment with operating costs and returns.
