Microsoft, which acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion, had announced the planned shutdown in February, urging users to switch to its newer communications platform, Microsoft Teams.

Skype’s popularity had been waning for years as newer competitors like WhatsApp and Zoom gained dominance.

Founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, Skype revolutionized online communication in the early 2000s and at its peak boasted hundreds of millions of monthly users.

It was acquired by eBay in 2005, then passed through several hands before landing with Microsoft, marking one of the tech industry’s more iconic lifecycle arcs.
