Moldova’s pro-Western governing party secured a clear parliamentary majority, defeating pro-Russian rivals in an election widely seen as a choice between East and West, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

With nearly all votes counted, the pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) led with 50.1%, while the pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc had 24.2%.
The Russia-friendly Alternativa Bloc came third, followed by the populist Our Party. The right-wing Democracy at Home party also cleared the threshold for parliament.
PAS is projected to control about 55 of the legislature’s 101 seats.
“This is a clear win for pro-European forces in Moldova, which will be able to ensure continuity in the pursuit of EU integration,” said Cristian Cantir, a Moldovan international relations professor at Oakland University.
