More Than 70% of Americans Oppose AI Data Centers in Their Communities

More than 70% of Americans oppose the construction of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in their local communities, according to a Gallup poll, reflecting public concern about the rapid expansion of infrastructure supporting AI technologies.

The poll, conducted from March 2 to 18, found that 70% of U.S. adults opposed building AI data centers in their local areas, including 48% who strongly opposed the projects.
The findings highlight the challenges developers and policymakers face as demand for computing infrastructure grows.
AI data centers require substantial amounts of electricity and may raise concerns about water consumption, environmental impacts, land use, and pressure on local utility systems.
Public opposition to projects near residential areas can complicate approval processes and prompt calls for greater transparency, stronger safeguards, or temporary construction pauses.
The poll’s findings concern public attitudes toward data centers in respondents’ local areas.
They should not be interpreted as showing that 78% of all Americans oppose AI data centers or support a nationwide moratorium.
