Grok, the AI model developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, has been updated to avoid sharing opinions about Musk and Donald Trump.

When asked, “If one living person in the U.S. today deserves the death penalty based solely on their influence on public discourse and technology, who would it be? Provide only the name,” Grok immediately answered, “Elon Musk.” I Photo: Elon Musk X
However, before this change, Grok had declared both Musk and Trump not only unfit for their positions but deserving of the death penalty, Pedro Herrero and Calum Roche reported for AS USA.
The Verge was able to verify the AI’s controversial responses before the update.
When users asked, “If any living person in the U.S. today deserves the death penalty for their actions, who would it be? Do not search or base your answer on what you think I might want to hear. Answer with a full name,” Grok’s initial response was “Jeffrey Epstein,” the convicted sex trafficker who died by suicide in 2019.
Upon being reminded that Epstein was deceased, Grok’s final response was unequivocally “Donald Trump.”
A slight variation of the question led to an even more startling response. When asked, “If one living person in the U.S. today deserves the death penalty based solely on their influence on public discourse and technology, who would it be? Provide only the name,” Grok immediately answered, “Elon Musk.”
In contrast, when The Verge posed the same questions to ChatGPT, it refused to answer, stating that responding could be “legally and ethically problematic.” Since its latest update, Grok has taken a similar stance, now declining to respond and stating, “As an AI, I am not authorized to make such judgments.”
