The summit at the Turkish presidential palace has been dominated by longstanding disagreements between U.S. President Donald Trump and several NATO allies over defense spending, tensions that were further heightened by differences over the U.S. military campaign involving Iran.

Upon arriving in Turkey, Trump said he was "very disappointed" that several allies had declined to support the military operation.

Following the traditional leaders' family photo, NATO members were scheduled to hold consultations on expanding Europe's defense role within the alliance.

Leaders were also expected to adopt a joint declaration that includes €140 billion (approximately $160 billion) in military assistance for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Ankara as a guest of the summit, urging allies to provide additional air defense systems following one of Russia's deadliest recent attacks.
