New York City Mayor Eric Adams ended his struggling reelection campaign, acknowledging he was no longer a viable contender after a year of scandal and political turmoil, Jake Offenhartz and Anthony Izaguirre reported for the Associated Press (AP).

In a video released on social media, Adams touted his record but said his now-dismissed federal corruption case left voters wary, while “constant media speculation” about his future made fundraising impossible.
“Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my reelection campaign,” he said. Adams did not endorse any candidate but warned of “insidious forces” using local government to “advance divisive agendas.”
His exit could boost former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has cast himself as the only centrist able to defeat Democratic nominee Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani.
Still, it is unclear whether Adams’ supporters will coalesce around him. Mamdani, 33, who beat Cuomo decisively in the Democratic primary, would be New York’s youngest and most liberal mayor in generations if elected.
