Oil industry leaders have urged Donald Trump to oppose any move by Iran to impose tolls on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, warning it could set a dangerous global precedent.

According to industry discussions reported by the Financial Times and cited by other outlets, executives emphasized that keeping the waterway open without additional costs is critical to global energy stability.
The American Petroleum Institute warned that introducing tolls at such a key chokepoint would disrupt markets and encourage similar actions elsewhere.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making it one of the most vital energy transit routes.
Industry figures, including Scott Sheffield, stressed that control of the strait must remain free from additional restrictions, suggesting that international cooperation may be needed to ensure open access.
The issue comes as tensions remain high following recent conflict, with Iran reportedly considering a long-term tolling system even after hostilities ease.
