President Vladimir Putin's government is facing increasing military and political pressure as the war in Ukraine continues, Jonathan Sweet and Mark Toth argued in an opinion article published by The Hill.

The authors contend that Russia's mounting battlefield losses and Ukraine's expanding drone campaign are exposing vulnerabilities within the Kremlin's war strategy.
According to the article, Russia could surpass 1.4 million military casualties within weeks if current trends continue, although casualty figures remain disputed and difficult to verify independently.
The authors also argued that Ukraine has moved closer to isolating the Crimean Peninsula by targeting key supply routes and military infrastructure.
Retired US Army Gen. David Petraeus recently wrote that Ukraine may be capable of isolating both Crimea and portions of the front line, describing the effort as "hugely impressive."
The article further highlighted Ukrainian drone strikes targeting the Saint Petersburg oil terminal and the Kronstadt naval base during the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently proposed an immediate ceasefire along current front lines and a face-to-face meeting with Putin in a neutral country.
According to the opinion piece, Putin rejected the proposal. The article concludes that prolonging the conflict may increase political and economic pressure on Russia.
