The app, often described as a friendlier alternative to X, had recently become the most downloaded app on the U.S. and UK Apple Stores. Many social media users have been leaving X, formerly known as Twitter, following the U.S. election. Lily Jamali reported for Reuters.
During the outage, some users worldwide had difficulty loading their feeds and notifications.
Bluesky spokesperson Emily Liu told the BBC that one of the platform’s internet providers “had some downtime, apparently because a fiber cable was out. That means it happened outside of our company.”
Bluesky shared a status notice from Cogent Communications, which stated that some customers using its network between Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia, had temporarily lost connectivity.
Not all users were affected, and the issue was largely resolved immediately, according to the company.
In the week following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, 2.25 million users signed up for Bluesky. The platform was founded by Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s cofounders.
