Alex Karp, chief executive officer of Palantir Technologies, said OpenAI and Anthropic have fundamentally mispriced their AI services, arguing that the token-based pricing model has left many enterprise customers frustrated, Cris Tolomia reported for Quartz.

Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box, Karp said, "Something has gone completely wrong."

He argued that many US businesses have come to believe they will spend heavily on AI tokens without generating meaningful value while potentially exposing their intellectual property in the process.

Although Karp avoided directly criticizing individual AI executives—joking that private debates with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei are entertaining—he said the industry's leading AI models have been "completely, irresponsibly, oversold."

According to Karp, corporate executives have privately told him that heavy spending on AI services has produced limited business value while raising concerns about sharing proprietary data with AI developers.

Palantir's recently published AI sovereignty manifesto states: "Data retention is your treasure. Transfer it at your own peril."

When CNBC co-anchor Becky Quick suggested he appeared angry, Karp responded that he was expressing the frustrations of American businesses rather than his own personal views.
