This photo shows one of the Phalanx close-in weapon systems (CIWS) aboard U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) being put to the test during a live-fire exercise in the West Philippine Sea last week.

CIWS is a point-defense weapon system for detecting and destroying short range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft which have penetrated outer defenses. Blue Ridge is the oldest operational ship in the Navy and, as 7th Fleet command ship, actively works to foster relationships with allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
