PSE Index Declines Further

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index declined further on Wednesday, closing at its lowest level of 5,679.48 points, down 58.92 points or 1.03 percent.

Market favorite International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) fell below ₱900, closing 1.98 percent lower at ₱891 as investors unloaded equities amid geopolitical concerns and rising interest rates.
It again topped trading activity with ₱2.25 billion in transactions.
Services posted the biggest decline at 1.84 percent, followed by financials at 1.29 percent, as banks were seen as being affected by temporary losses on their bond holdings following the rise in interest rates.
The three major banks — BDO Unibank, Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Metrobank), and Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) — all posted losses.
Industrials declined 0.61 percent, while mining and oil fell 1.21 percent.
Holding firms posted the lone gain, with market bellwether SM Investments Corp. rising 0.04 percent to ₱499.80 and Ayala Corp. surging 2.04 percent to ₱500.
The market is expected to test its next support level below 5,600 points as an uptick in inflation could weigh on economic activity. The weakening peso and continuing geopolitical tensions could also affect crude oil prices.
Value turnover was 50 percent higher than the average, reaching ₱9.09 billion as investors shifted their positions away from equities, while foreign funds moved toward conglomerates, which generally have diversified businesses.
Foreign trades amounted to ₱11.27 billion, with net foreign selling reaching ₱950 million, based on foreign buying of ₱5.16 billion against selling of ₱6.11 billion.
Market breadth remained negative, with 106 losers against 74 gainers and 71 shares unchanged, including newly listed PNB Holdings Corp., which closed at ₱1.20.
