Adding to the selling pressure was Mynt Inc.'s planned ₱61-billion initial public offering (IPO). Some institutional investors reportedly sold existing holdings to free up funds for their allocations in the offering.

The IPO, which involves the parent company of GCash, attracted strong demand from institutional investors.

All six sectoral indices posted losses.

The holding firms and services indices each fell 0.85 percent. Financials declined 0.80 percent, industrials dropped 0.54 percent, while mining and oil and property each slipped 0.36 percent.

Aboitiz Equity Ventures led the decline among conglomerates, falling 4.41 percent to ₱39. Market bellwether SM Investments Corp. dropped 1.49 percent to ₱530.

Market favorite International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) also declined 1.36 percent to ₱872, with trades worth ₱987 million.

Total market turnover was muted at ₱4.29 billion, while foreign transactions amounted to ₱4.7 billion. Net foreign selling reached ₱468 million, with foreign buying at ₱2.153 billion and selling at ₱2.621 billion.

Market breadth was negative, with 112 declining stocks, 77 advancing issues and 59 shares unchanged.

One relatively positive sign was the index's recovery from its intraday low of 5,682.48 points.

The market may continue to trade sideways, with a downward bias, amid peso weakness, persistent inflationary pressures and expectations of a possible interest-rate increase.

However, this outlook should be attributed to a named analyst or brokerage if it is based on market commentary.
