PSE Index Inches Higher After Profit Taking

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index rose slightly on Wednesday, closing at 5,963.77 points, up 10.61 points or 0.18%, as profit-taking tempered early gains that briefly pushed the benchmark past the 6,000 level.

Profit-taking dragged down the property sub-index, which slipped 0.78%, and services, which fell 0.63%, as investors locked in profits from recent gains.


Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) and SM Prime Holdings (SMPH) closed lower at ₱20.15 (down 2.66%) and ₱22.70 (down 0.87%), respectively.


ALI earlier hit a high of ₱21.20, while SMPH reached ₱22.95 intraday. International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) fell 1.57% to ₱531.50, after touching an intraday high of ₱542.50.


Gains were seen in other sectors: financials rose 0.56%, industrials climbed 1.39%, holding firms advanced 0.78%, and mining and oil jumped 3.29%.


The main index had surged earlier in the session, hitting an intraday high of 6,021.29 points before profit-taking trimmed gains, though it still closed higher from Tuesday’s finish.

Among notable trades, BDO Unibank rose 0.52% to ₱135.20; Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) gained 0.58% to ₱104.60; Jollibee Foods Corp. advanced 0.73% to ₱219.60; Manila Water Co. jumped 3.17% to ₱35.80; Apex Mining climbed 2.25% to ₱9.10; Philex Mining rose 4.81% to ₱8.07; and OceanaGold added 3.13% to ₱26.35.


Value turnover reached ₱6.45 billion, with 110 gainers, 74 losers, and 61 unchanged issues, including Cebu Air, PSE, ACEN Corp., Basic Energy, Emperador, Citicore REIT, Petron, DMCI Holdings, and Filinvest Land.


Among the day’s gainers were China Bank, First Gen, Semirara Mining, SP New Energy (SPNEC), Jollibee Foods, Monde Nissin, Universal Robina, Megawide, Abacore, and San Miguel.


Losers included Aboitiz Power, PNB, Topline, Petron, Alliance Global, AgriNurture, National Reinsurance, DoubleDragon, and ABS-CBN.
