PSE Index Plunges 0.98% on Economic Woes

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index plunged on Tuesday, falling 61.15 points, or 0.98%, to 6,190.23 points amid mounting economic concerns.

All six sub-indices posted losses, with the services and holding firms sectors declining 1.65% and 1.05%, respectively, amid economic headwinds from rising crude oil prices, the peso's depreciation against the US dollar and expectations of higher inflation.
Market favorite International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) declined 2.16% to ₱949, while market bellwether SM Investments Corp. retreated 1.21% to ₱573.
Other major losers included First Gen Corp., which fell 5.53%, and BDO Unibank Inc., which declined 1.62% to ₱121.20. Financials lost 0.65%, industrials fell 0.06%, mining and oil declined 0.77%, and property slipped 0.26%.
Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) and PLDT Inc. were unchanged at ₱479 and ₱1,195, respectively.
Ayala Land Inc. rose on bargain hunting, gaining 3.95% to ₱15.80. The market opened at 6,217 points, which was also its intraday high. It then slid to an intraday low of 6,171.96 points before recovering slightly toward the close.
Value turnover amounted to ₱5.26 billion, while foreign trades reached ₱4.077 billion.
Net foreign selling totaled ₱542 million, with foreign buying at ₱1.76 billion and foreign selling at ₱2.30 billion. Market breadth was negative, with 108 losers against 77 gainers, while 66 shares were unchanged.
