The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index returned to the psychological 6,000-point level on Thursday, closing at 6,071.06, up 79.69 points or 1.33 percent, although market uncertainty remained.

Global port operator ICTSI, which accounts for about one-fifth of the PSE's market capitalization, surged 5.13 percent to P895 per share. The stock generated P1.9 billion in trades, accounting for nearly one-fourth of total market turnover.
Investor sentiment remained cautious, however, as declining gold prices and expectations of higher interest rates weighed on mining stocks.
The mining and oil sector fell 4.82 percent, with Apex Mining dropping 6.7 percent to P13.08 and Philex Mining declining 1.33 percent to P7.61.
Aside from the mining and oil sector, financial stocks also weakened, with the sector losing 1.48 percent. BDO Unibank fell 2.01 percent to P122, while Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) slipped 1.87 percent to P94.30.
Meanwhile, the property sector rose 0.57 percent, industrials gained 0.33 percent, holding firms advanced 0.88 percent and services climbed 3.71 percent.
The market traded within a volatile range, touching a low of 6,004.96 points and a high of 6,092.52 points amid continuing uncertainty. Total value turnover reached P8.3 billion, while foreign trades amounted to P7.24 billion.
Market breadth remained negative, with losers outnumbering gainers, 103 to 61, while 63 issues were unchanged.
