The PSE index opened higher and climbed to an intraday peak of 6,103.74 points before retreating to a low of 6,058.89 points as the peso weakened to an intraday low of ₱62.77 per US dollar.

The benchmark index recovered some ground toward the close, ending at 6,083.68 points, down 6.92 points, or 0.11 percent.

Only the industrial sub-index posted a gain, rising 0.97 percent, as Manila Electric Co. (MERALCO) surged 3.90 percent to ₱480.

The other sub-indices declined, although their losses were pared toward the close.

Holding firms retreated 0.13 percent, financials fell 0.31 percent, property declined 0.38 percent, while services and mining and oil both slipped 0.14 percent.

Market favorite International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) fell 0.11 percent to ₱933.50, while market bellwether SM Investments Corp. declined 0.18 percent to ₱561.

Value turnover remained muted at about ₱3.84 billion, roughly a fifth below the average, as investors remained unconvinced by the on-and-off peace overtures amid the Middle East geopolitical crisis and the renewed rise in crude oil prices.
