The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index surged Monday as investors welcomed signs of an end to the war involving Iran, climbing sharply to 6,272.88 points, up by 362.82 points or 6.14 percent.

Optimism greeted the bourse opening, with the index initially rising to 6,115.93 points as investors bought blue-chip stocks and even second-liners, pushing the PSE index to an intraday high of 6,320.75 points.
Market bellwether SM Investments posted its biggest gain for the year, rising 8.89 percent to P637, while market favorite ICTSI traded P3.16 billion worth of shares — the first time it hit the P3 billion mark — as it closed 5.79 percent higher at P950.
Many blue-chip stocks opened lower before surging higher, although profit-taking later took hold. Meralco opened at a low of P576, surged to a high of P593, and closed at P584, up 1.74 percent.
Apex Mining climbed to an intraday high of P15.42 after opening at P14.80, before closing at P15.26, up 7.77 percent.
Financials — with banks previously battered by economic concerns stemming from the Iran crisis — posted the strongest gain of 9.04 percent, followed by mining and oil, which rose 7.41 percent.
Holding firms advanced 5.98 percent, services gained 4.97 percent, property climbed 4.79 percent, and industrials rose 2.56 percent.
Value turnover reached P12.7 billion, roughly twice the average, while market breadth remained positive, with gainers nearly tripling losers, 144 to 58.
Foreign investors were also net buyers at P1.02 billion, with foreign buying amounting to P7.49 billion against foreign selling of P6.46 billion.
Market analysts expect stocks to continue rising on optimism over the easing of hostilities involving Iran, particularly following statements from the US and Iran signaling an end to the conflict, with a peace agreement reportedly set to be signed in Europe.
