PSE Index Surges, Then Cools Down at Close

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index surged early Tuesday but cooled down at the close, as the services sub-index declined, ending the day up by 23.89 points, or 0.39%, at 6,076.22.

Ports operator ICTSI, which emerged as the most active stock with ₱1.11 billion in trades, closed 1.47% lower at ₱537 after hitting an intraday high of ₱560 before selling ensued.


Together with the 2.43% drop in Puregold to ₱40.10, the services sector posted the lone loss among sub-indices, declining by 2.43%.


The market opened at its lowest for the day and hit its peak at 6,112.99 points before profit-taking trimmed gains.


Market bellwether SM Investments rose 1.36% to ₱745, supported by gains in GT Capital (up 1.74% to ₱585) and LT Group (up 0.13% to ₱14.92), lifting the holding firms sub-index by 0.77%. Financials gained 0.70%, buoyed by BDO Unibank, which advanced 2.40% to ₱137.40.

The industrial sector climbed 0.89%, led by Universal Robina (up 1.60% to ₱76.20) and Jollibee Foods (up 0.55% to ₱219.20). Property gained 0.65% as SM Prime advanced 1.77% to ₱23, while Ayala Land added 0.43% to ₱23.25.


Mining and oil surged 2.41% on gold’s rally after prices breached $4,000 per ounce. Apex Mining jumped 5.15% to ₱11.02, Philex Mining climbed 1.92% to ₱10.60, and OceanaGold gained 1.15% to ₱30.70.


Value turnover reached ₱6.16 billion, with foreign investors posting net sales of ₱345 million. Foreign buying amounted to ₱3.33 billion, while foreign selling totaled ₱3.67 billion.


There were 102 gainers, 87 losers, and 62 unchanged issues, including San Miguel, Union Bank, Alternergy, DMCI Holdings, First Gen, and ABS-CBN.

Among the gainers were Meralco, Manila Water, PLDT, ACEN Corp., Petron, JG Summit, Monde Nissin, SPNEC, Ginebra, Megawide, AREIT REIT, DoubleDragon, Robinsons Land, and GMA-7.


Among the losers were Ayala Corp., Bank of the Philippine Islands, Synergy Grid, Filinvest Land, DigiPlus, Bloomberry, Converge, Aboitiz Power, Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Security Bank, Cebu Air, Atlas Mining, China Bank, Topline, Vitarich, and Emperador.
