PSE Welcomes Chinese New Year Hushed

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index edged down to 6,368.55, off 16.03 points or 0.25%, after recovering some losses before the close.

Dragged by steep declines in Semirara Mining and Power Corporation and parent DMCI Holdings, the market fell to an intraday low of 6,328.68 before bargain hunters lifted select blue chips.


Financials managed to turn positive, rising 0.13%.



Semirara and DMCI were the session’s biggest losers, tumbling 21.39% to ₱26.10 and 14.66% to ₱9.20, respectively, on news that a coal contract will expire next year.

Industrials dropped 0.89%, holding firms declined 0.21%, services slipped 0.16%, mining and oil lost 0.80%, and property retreated 0.65%.


Shares of Jollibee Foods Corporation gained 0.58% to ₱209 after reporting a 12% rise in fourth-quarter sales.


Market bellwether SM Investments Corporation rose 0.87% to ₱694.



International Container Terminal Services Inc. advanced 0.30% to ₱660, BDO Unibank added 0.37% to ₱136.50, and newly listed Maynilad Water Services ticked up 0.35% to ₱20.05.


Value turnover was light at ₱5.27 billion, with foreign trades amounting to ₱4.68 billion. Net foreign selling reached ₱90 million, from ₱2.296 billion in buying against ₱2.387 billion in selling.



There were 79 gainers, 140 losers and 51 unchanged issues, including San Miguel Corporation, Filinvest Development Corporation, Ginebra San Miguel, Petron Corporation, Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation and Basic Energy Corporation.


Among the gainers were Monde Nissin, Nickel Asia Corporation, SP New Energy Corporation, Top Line Business Development, Megawide Construction Corporation, DigiPlus Interactive, Megaworld Corporation, PhilWeb Corporation, and MREIT.



Decliners included Ayala Land, SM Prime Holdings, Metropolitan Bank & Trust Company, Bank of the Philippine Islands, Bloomberry Resorts Corporation, ACEN Corporation, DITO CME Holdings, PLDT, Globe Telecom, and Converge ICT Solutions.
