Vivek Ramaswamy, appointed by Donald Trump to co-lead the commission alongside Elon Musk, stepped down as Trump assumed office, Thomas Beaumont and Jonathan J. Cooper reported for the Associated Press.
Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former GOP presidential candidate, is reportedly considering a run for governor of Ohio in 2026. A Cincinnati native, the 39-year-old was previously interested in filling Vice President J.D.
Vance’s Senate seat but stepped aside after Ohio Governor Mike DeWine selected Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted for the role.
“Vivek Ramaswamy played a critical role in helping us create DOGE,” said commission spokesperson Anna Kelly. “As he intends to pursue elected office, he must remain outside the commission under its structure. We thank him for his contributions.”
DOGE, a nongovernmental task force, is central to Trump’s “Save America” agenda, aiming to cut federal regulations, reduce the workforce, and slash $2 trillion from the federal budget.
Critics argue Musk’s dual role as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX raises ethics concerns, given his companies’ financial ties to government contracts.
