SHIP EXPLOSION

Several sailors were injured after an explosion on board a ship at Naval Base San Diego, according to the San Diego Fire Department.


The sailors are being treated for a variety of injuries after the explosion on the USS Bonhomme Richard, according to SDFD's official Twitter account said a report from KCRA 3 News.

Seventeen sailors and four civilians were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, said officials with the Naval Surface Forces of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Firefighters are battling a three-alarm fire on the ship, said Mónica Muñoz, of the city fire department. Several different agencies are working to fight the blaze.

The blaze was reported shortly before 9 a.m. on the USS Bonhomme Richard, said Krishna Jackson, the base's public information officer.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Jackson didn't know where on the 840-foot amphibious assault vessel the fire sparked.

Officials said approximately 160 sailors were on board Sunday morning.

All of the crew is off the ship and accounted for, according to a tweet from the U.S. Pacific Fleet Naval Surface Forces.

The flames sent up a huge plume of dark smoke visible around San Diego.

San Diego is the Bonhomme Richard's home port and it was undergoing routine maintenance at the time of the fire.
