Society of Jesus Calls For End To Gaza Conflict: "We Cannot Be Silent!"

The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, issued a powerful statement condemning the ongoing war in Gaza, which has now continued for almost six months.

Jesuits Issue Call for Peace in Gaza: Members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), raise their voices against the ongoing war in Gaza. In their statement, they call for an immediate ceasefire and urge for humanitarian aid to reach those affected by the conflict, emphasizing the need for reconciliation and dialogue in the Middle East.

The Jesuits, a Catholic religious order, emphasized their commitment to raising their voices in opposition to the ongoing violence, destruction, and suffering that have plagued the region since October 2023.

The statement, issued by the Jesuit leadership, reflects the deep concern among religious and humanitarian groups over the devastation caused by the conflict.

The Society of Jesus highlighted the catastrophic impact of the war, both in terms of loss of life and the toll on infrastructure and civilian well-being.

According to collective news reports, tens of thousands of people have died, with nearly 1,800 Israelis and over 32,000 Palestinians killed, not including those yet to be recovered from under rubble.

The Jesuits described the current situation in Gaza as dire, with famine and the spread of disease worsening the humanitarian crisis.

They emphasized that the prolonged conflict has left hundreds of thousands of people wounded, homeless, and without access to basic necessities like food and clean water.

"We, Jesuits, reiterate our commitment not to remain silent," the statement declared, condemning the failure to achieve a ceasefire and to ensure basic humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.

The Jesuits criticized the ongoing violence as a "scandal" and "shame," calling for an immediate ceasefire and a halt to the bloodshed. Drawing from their religious roots and commitment to peace, the Jesuits referenced biblical imagery to convey their hope for a better future.

They quoted the book of Isaiah, envisioning a time when "they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks."

The Jesuits called for an end to violence and a return to dialogue and reconciliation, emphasizing that war is a choice, not an unavoidable destiny. The Jesuits joined voices with Pope Francis, who has repeatedly spoken out against the conflict, condemning war as "a defeat" and urging for a peaceful resolution.

The Society of Jesus reiterated the call for the release of all hostages taken on October 7, 2023, as well as negotiations aimed at bringing freedom, liberty, and justice to the Middle East.

As the war in Gaza continues, the Jesuits stand firm in their conviction that peace is possible through dialogue, compassion, and a commitment to justice. Their statement serves as a call to action for all those who seek an end to violence and a lasting peace in the region.
