President Donald Trump has floated the prospect of $5,000 government checks ahead of the November midterm elections, but some of his supporters are skeptical that the payments will materialize, Josh Boak, Becky Bohrer and Bill Barrow reported for The Associated Press (AP).

“I mean, I guess it’s good for some people. I really don’t care,” said Jamie Alvarez, who attended Trump’s recent rally in Alaska wearing a red, white and blue outfit.

“I don’t feel like your vote should be bought. I feel like you should vote for who you feel is going to do the best job,” Alvarez added.

Joseph Eatherton, who also attended the rally, said he was “not sure if it’s necessary.”

Asked whether Trump could deliver the promised money, he replied, “I don’t know, and I hate being an armchair quarterback.”

Trump has previously floated other proposals involving direct payments to Americans, including $2,000 payments funded by tariff revenues and large refunds tied to savings from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Those proposals have not resulted in the broad payments described.]

The latest pledge could become an issue for voters as they decide which party will control Congress after the Nov. 3 midterm elections. However, the proposed $5,000 checks should not be treated as an approved or guaranteed government benefit.
