Sony plans to acquire 50 billion yen ($318 million) worth of new shares issued by Kadokawa in January, raising its stake from 2% to around 10%, making it the largest shareholder.
The two firms will collaborate on adapting Kadokawa's content into live-action films and TV dramas, co-producing anime works, and expanding global distribution.
This move aligns with Sony's efforts to strengthen its animation offerings. Once an electronics manufacturer, Sony has transformed into an entertainment powerhouse, driven by its gaming, music, and movie divisions.
Kadokawa, known for its popular anime series like Bungo Stray Dogs and Oshi No Ko, also owns the gaming subsidiary FromSoftware, which developed the acclaimed action role-playing game Elden Ring.
