Billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer has exited California’s gubernatorial race and endorsed Xavier Becerra, reshaping the political landscape ahead of the November election.

Steyer, who campaigned as a progressive candidate focused heavily on climate policy, finished third in the primary election behind Becerra and Republican candidate Steve Hilton, a Trump-backed political commentator.
His campaign spent millions criticizing Becerra over alleged ties to oil-industry funding and calling for stronger action against major utility companies.
In his concession statement, Steyer endorsed Becerra, warning that a victory by Hilton “would be a travesty.”
Environmental groups that supported Steyer said his departure reduces the likelihood that climate change will remain a central issue in the gubernatorial campaign.
Advocates had hoped the general election would feature a deeper debate on how climate policy intersects with California’s cost-of-living concerns.
