James Gunn’s Superman dominated the box office during another blockbuster summer weekend, bringing in $122 million in domestic ticket sales despite criticism from conservative commentators.

The weekend's total box office revenue was projected to reach nearly $200 million, Janet H. Cho reported for Barron’s Daily.
The film—Warner Bros.’ first release under its new DC Studios unit—also grossed $95 million overseas, including $6.6 million in China, bringing its global total to an estimated $217 million.
The strong opening is helping to lift what had been a slow start to Hollywood’s summer.
According to Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, total domestic ticket sales have reached $4.7 billion so far this year, up 15% compared to the same period in 2024.
A flurry of releases over the past 10 weeks has pushed summer sales 16.5% higher than last year.
Comcast’s Universal Pictures scored a strong second-week showing with Jurassic World Rebirth, which earned another $40 million domestically and has reached $529.5 million worldwide.
Warner Bros. and Apple Original Films’ F1: The Movie finished third, earning $13 million over the weekend and $393.4 million globally since its June 27 release.
Superman is the third film this year to open with more than $100 million in domestic box office revenue during its opening weekend. The others: Warner Bros.’ Minecraft: The Movie ($162.7 million) and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch reboot ($146 million).
