The approval rating for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Cabinet dropped to 53% in a nationwide public opinion poll conducted by Mainichi Shimbun on April 18 and 19, marking the lowest level since it was formed, Daisuke Nohara reported.

The Cabinet approval rating fell by 5 percentage points from the 58% recorded in the previous survey conducted on March 28 and 29. This marks the second consecutive month of decline.
The disapproval rating rose by 5 points, from 28% to 33%.
Prime Minister Takaichi, who is also president of the Liberal Democratic Party, is the first woman to serve in both roles. Since the Cabinet was formed in October last year, it maintained approval ratings above 65% for the first three months.
Although the figure fell below 60% for the first time in January, the LDP secured a landslide victory in the House of Representatives election in February, pushing approval ratings back into the 60% range.
Support began to decline again in March, but remains significantly higher than the disapproval rating.
The survey was conducted using the smartphone-based “d-Survey” method. Respondents were randomly selected from NTT Docomo’s “d Point Club” membership, which covers roughly 77 million people aged 18 and older nationwide.
The poll received 1,868 valid responses.
