These closures are part of Tata Steel's plan to revamp its loss-making UK steelmaking business by transitioning to lower carbon electric arc furnaces, a proposal supported by £500 million ($634.10 million) of government funding.
Tata Steel stated that approximately 2,500 roles were likely to be eliminated in the next 18 months, affecting a total of 2,800 jobs.
The company will initiate a consultation process as part of the restructuring and expressed its intention to maximize voluntary redundancies. Tata Steel Chief Executive T V Narendran remarked, "The course we are proposing is difficult, but we believe it is the right one."
