Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov criticized French authorities for what he called a "misguided" arrest in connection with allegations of insufficient moderation on the messaging platform, Ali Abbas Ahmadi reported for BBC News.

In his first public statement since his detention, Durov refuted claims that Telegram is "some sort of anarchic paradise," calling such accusations "absolutely untrue."

Durov was arrested on Aug. 25 at an airport near Paris and has since been placed under formal investigation for suspected complicity in enabling illicit transactions, drug trafficking, fraud, and the dissemination of child sex abuse material on the platform.

In France, being placed under formal investigation does not imply guilt or guarantee a trial, but it signifies that the case is considered strong enough to merit further investigation.

In a statement published on Telegram, Durov said it was "surprising" and "misguided" to hold him responsible for crimes committed by third parties using the platform.
