Democrats James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa delivered major victories in Texas on Election Day, ending the Republican Party’s decades-long hold on statewide offices and potentially changing the political outlook for the 2028 presidential race. Philip Elliott reported on the results for TIME.

Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race, while Hinojosa defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.

Their victories marked the first time Democrats had won statewide elections in Texas since 1994.

The results represented a major setback for Republicans in a state that President Donald Trump carried by a wide margin in 2024. Democrats also made gains in congressional races, suggesting that the shift extended beyond the two closely watched statewide contests.

For Democrats, the victories rewarded years of efforts to make Texas competitive.

The party had repeatedly sought to capitalize on demographic changes and shifting voter attitudes, but previous election cycles had failed to produce comparable statewide breakthroughs.

The results also dealt a blow to billionaire Elon Musk, who spent heavily to support Republican candidates, particularly Paxton.

Musk’s political spending did not prevent the Democratic victories.

The outcome could force Republicans to reassess their electoral strategy ahead of 2028.

Texas has 40 electoral votes, making it a major prize in presidential elections. If the state becomes more competitive, Republicans could face a narrower path to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.
