The Philippines has successfully made its first export of Hass avocados to South Korea, marking a significant step in the trade relationship between the two countries.
Hass avocados, known for their dark green, bumpy peel that turns dark purplish-black when ripe, are popular in South Korea for use in salads and sandwiches.
The ceremonial send-off of the initial shipment, consisting of 3,040 boxes of Hass avocados valued at approximately US$48,433, was organized by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) through the National Plant Quarantine Services Division (NPQSD).
The send-off event took place at KTC Port Tibungco, Davao City on September 30, 2023, and was attended by various officials, including DA-BPI Assistant Director for Regulatory Services Ruel Gesmundo, DA-Region XI Director Abel James Moteagudo, and Dole Philippines Senior Vice President and Stanfilco Division General Manager Tetsuya Kitae.
The shipment is expected to arrive at Pyongtaek Port, South Korea, on October 8, 2023.
This development is the result of efforts to strengthen agricultural development and trade between the Philippines and South Korea, as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has actively promoted Philippine fruit exports.
Hass avocados, known for their dark green, bumpy peel that turns dark purplish-black when ripe, are popular in South Korea for use in salads and sandwiches. While they are available in South Korea, most of them come from Latin America.
With the increasing demand for healthy lifestyle-related agricultural products in South Korea, the Philippines sees an opportunity to cater to this market.
The Philippines officially expressed its intent to export fresh Hass avocado fruits to South Korea, following a request from Dole Philippines. An agreement between the Department of Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) of South Korea and DA-BPI was reached on June 19, 2023, and it came into effect on September 8, 2023.
The initial shipments of Hass avocados will be sourced from orchards accredited by the DA's Bureau of Plant Industry and packaged by Dole Philippines, Inc. in Davao, Bukidnon, and South Cotabato.
