This previously unreported strategy marks a pivot by the world’s top-selling automaker in the world’s largest car market, highlighting Toyota’s ambition to reclaim market share lost to local competitors like BYD.
Toyota’s approach diverges from other global automakers, including several Japanese brands, which are scaling back or exiting the Chinese market.
The company’s target could reach as high as 3 million vehicles per year by decade’s end, according to two sources, representing a 63% increase from the 1.84 million vehicles it produced in China in 2022.
Toyota has shared its production goals with some suppliers, aiming to reassure them of its commitment to China and secure its supply chain.
