Toyota Motor Corp. announced on Friday that its global production in August dropped 11.2% from a year earlier to 709,571 vehicles, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline.
Toyota's global sales were similarly affected, with a 3.1% decline to 826,863 vehicles, weighed down by the domestic quality scandal and fierce competition in China. I Photo: TOYOTA Facebook
The production was partially suspended due to a vehicle certification scandal and a typhoon, Kyodo News reported.
Domestic output fell by 22.2% to 185,680 vehicles, as the production of popular models like the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross remained halted following a suspension in June.
The numbers were also impacted by a temporary production freeze at all domestic factories due to a typhoon in late August.
Production of these models resumed in early September after Japan's transport ministry confirmed their safety and lifted a shipment ban, which had been imposed after Toyota admitted to not fully adhering to government standards in vehicle testing.
Production outside Japan also decreased, dropping by 6.5% to 523,891 vehicles. This decline followed a recall of the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX in North America.
Toyota's global sales were similarly affected, with a 3.1% decline to 826,863 vehicles, weighed down by the domestic quality scandal and fierce competition in China. Toyota sold 109,505 units in Japan, down 9.1%, as the three affected models couldn't be shipped.
Meanwhile, sales in China dropped 13.5% as local competitors offering more affordable electric vehicles gained market share, leading to a 2.1% drop in overseas sales to 717,358 units, Mainichi Japan reported.
