Toyota Motor sold 10.8 million vehicles in 2024, the company announced, maintaining its position as the world's top-selling automaker for the fifth consecutive year, Daniel Leussink reported for Reuters.

The Japanese automaker posted a 3.7% decline in global group unit sales last year, including those of its compact car subsidiary Daihatsu and truck unit Hino Motors. The decline was largely due to a sharp drop in sales in Japan, where Toyota faced fallout from governance issues related to certification test procedures, particularly at Daihatsu.
Second-ranked German rival Volkswagen Group reported earlier this month that its unit sales fell 2.3% in 2024 to just over 9 million vehicles, as it works to cut costs at home and navigate a price war in key market China.
Sales of Toyota's parent-only vehicles—including its namesake and Lexus brands—declined 1.4% from the previous year to 10.2 million, driven by a double-digit drop in Japan.
