According to an internal termination email obtained by NBC News, Trent Morse, deputy director of presidential personnel, informed Hayden her position was terminated "effective immediately."
Principal Deputy Librarian Robert Newlen confirmed the firing to Library of Congress staff in a separate email. Democrats quickly denounced the dismissal.
“This is a complete disgrace,” said Rep. Joe Morelle of New York. Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts added, “Donald Trump just fired my dear friend Dr. Carla Hayden via email... The Library of Congress represents some of the best America has to offer.”
Hayden, appointed during the Obama administration, was the first woman and the first African American to serve as Librarian of Congress.
