The initiative, referred to as “Operation Freedom,” signals an escalation in U.S. involvement in the region.

According to U.S. Central Command, the mission will involve guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, unmanned platforms, and approximately 15,000 service members.

Details of how the operation will be carried out remain limited. It is unclear whether U.S. forces will directly escort commercial vessels through the strait — a move Iran has warned could violate an existing ceasefire agreement, according to the Associated Press (AP).
