President Trump signed a memorandum authorizing the deployment, describing it as a response to “lawlessness” in California. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the move aimed to address unrest surrounding ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
Several protesters were detained by the LAPD after reentering areas ordered cleared, police said. Those arrested were charged with failing to disperse during an unlawful assembly.
California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the federal action, calling it “purposefully inflammatory” and warned it would “only escalate tensions.”
While some confrontations occurred in Paramount and Compton, demonstrations in central Los Angeles remained largely peaceful—contradicting Trump’s characterization, ABC News’ Jennifer Watts reported.
