Alina Habba, President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer, has resigned as the acting U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey following an appeals court ruling that found she was serving in the position unlawfully, Hannah Rabinowitz, Kara Scannell and Casey Gannon reported for CNN.

Habba's announcement comes one week after a panel of judges from the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the Trump administration violated the law when it used a series of maneuvers to install her in the role after failing to win Senate confirmation. (Photo: U.S. Department of Justice)

Habba, a staunch defender of Trump both as his attorney and on the campaign trail, said she would step down to protect “the stability and integrity of the office which I love.”

She added: “But do not mistake compliance for surrender. This decision will not weaken the Justice Department and it will not weaken me.” The Justice Department said Habba’s duties will be divided among three officials.

In a statement shared on X, Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department will seek further review of the ruling deeming Habba’s appointment unlawful and that Habba will return to the position if the decision is reversed.
