Trump’s War on Clean Power Causes Energy Prices to Soar

President Donald Trump’s pledge to slash energy prices “by half within 12 months” has “failed spectacularly,” the New York Times editorial board argued in an op-ed blaming skyrocketing energy costs squarely on the president’s “war on solar and wind power,” Alexander Willis reported for Raw Story.

“Trump ran for president promising to reduce the cost of living—and energy prices in particular,” the editorial read. “He has failed so far.”
During Trump’s second term, electricity prices have risen at an unprecedented rate, climbing 10% in the first half of 2025 alone.
The Times attributed the surge to supply constraints driven by the war in Ukraine and the soaring energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers—costs that are often subsidized by nearby communities.
Yet instead of expanding access to renewable energy, Trump has waged a “war” on solar and wind power, making “matters worse,” the op-ed argued, and setting the stage for higher prices for nonrenewable sources like gas.
“Gas prices will also increase over the next decade, according to Rhodium Group, as consumers who would otherwise have driven electric cars continue using vehicles that burn fossil fuels,” it said.
Trump has repeatedly attacked renewable energy sources as “horrible,” railing against windmills for “causing whales to die in numbers never seen before,” “killing your birds,” “ruining your oceans,” and “destroying property values.”
