President Donald Trump escalated tensions with European allies by threatening to impose 200 percent tariffs on French wine, underscoring the stakes ahead of high-level meetings at the World Economic Forum in Davos, after French President Emmanuel Macron declined to support Trump’s latest Gaza peace initiative. Ania Nussbaum, Josh Wingrove, and Samy Adghirni reported for Bloomberg News.

Trump said he would target France’s politically sensitive agricultural sector following Macron’s rejection of a proposed Gaza “peace board” that would require participating countries to contribute $1 billion each.
Trump also published a text message from Macron inviting him to dinner in Paris.
Macron proposed broader talks involving Ukraine, Syria, Denmark, and Russia to address a range of issues, including Trump’s demand that Denmark cede control of Greenland on security grounds.
“I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron told Trump in the message, which was confirmed by a French official.
Trump intensified disputes with European leaders in Davos.
He criticized the UK over plans to return sovereignty of Diego Garcia to Mauritius, threatened eight European countries with tariffs for opposing his Greenland demands, and attacked Norway for denying him the Nobel Peace Prize (which is not awarded by the Norwegian government).
He likewise pressed France to join what he has called a “Board of Peace” alongside leaders such as Belarus’ Alexander Lukashenko and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Alan Katz and Jenni Marsh also reported for Bloomberg News.
