Trump Turns to Putin for Russian Diesel as Ukraine Peace Talks Remain Uncertain

U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for Russia to supply diesel to the American and global markets following a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, even as prospects for renewed peace negotiations over Ukraine remained uncertain.

Trump announced the arrangement on Friday, saying Russia would immediately provide more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel, followed by additional shipments in November and later months.
The announcement came as his administration faced mounting pressure to address rising fuel costs ahead of the November midterm elections.
The U.S. Treasury Department subsequently authorized certain transactions involving Russian-origin diesel through April 7, 2027, according to reporting by The Daily Beast.
The move represented a change in sanctions policy intended to facilitate the proposed fuel shipments.
However, the announcement did not establish that all the promised supplies had already been delivered or that the arrangement would significantly reduce prices at American fuel pumps.
The deal also drew criticism because Russia continues to wage war against Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials warned that easing sanctions without a clear and lasting de-escalation agreement could benefit Moscow without bringing peace closer.
During the call, Putin reportedly maintained Russia’s existing position on the war. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described the conversation as friendly and said the leaders had ended the call simultaneously.
According to Ushakov, Putin also argued that Ukrainian drone attacks had complicated the prospect of renewed negotiations.
The Kremlin’s account should be treated as an attributed statement rather than independent proof that Ukraine alone was responsible for the lack of progress in peace talks.
Energy and foreign-policy analysts have questioned whether the proposed Russian shipments would materially lower U.S. diesel prices.
The quantities announced would enter a large and volatile global market, and the effect on retail prices would depend on delivery schedules, market conditions and other supply constraints.
The announcement has therefore created two separate questions: whether Russian diesel can provide meaningful relief to American consumers, and whether easing sanctions without a wider settlement could weaken efforts to pressure Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
