President Donald Trump has admitted that he wants to end mail-in voting to block Democrats from winning elections.

During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump openly outlined his plan to undermine the upcoming midterms, Edith Olmsted reported for The New Republic.
“We got to stop mail-in voting, and the Republicans have to lead the charge. The Democrats want it because they have horrible policy,” Trump said.
“If you don’t have mail-in voting, you’re not gonna have many Democrats get elected. That’s bigger than anything having to do with redistricting, believe me.”
Trump pledged to sign an executive order ending mail-in voting, falsely claiming the U.S. was among the only countries to allow the practice. In reality, more than 30 countries—including Canada, the U.K., Germany, Australia, and Switzerland—permit mail-in ballots.
His push rests on false claims of widespread voter fraud. Notably, Trump raised no concerns about mail-in ballots when he won in 2024, though he railed against them before and after losing in 2020.
While the president lacks the authority to strip states of their power to administer elections, analysts say Trump appears intent on creating a pretext to reject mail-in votes during the midterms.
He also referenced his controversial redistricting effort in Texas, which he hopes will gerrymander the state in Republicans’ favor.
