Two Filipino Seafarers Killed in Tanker Attack Near Strait of Hormuz

Two Filipino seafarers were killed when a Saudi-flagged oil tanker was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi shipping company Bahri said.

The Saudi-flagged tanker Sidr was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, killing two Filipino seafarers aboard the vessel.

The company confirmed the deaths aboard the tanker Sidr, which was involved in a security incident late Monday while passing through the strategic waterway. Bahri did not initially identify the two fatalities. 

The Department of Migrant Workers later confirmed that the two victims were among 16 Filipino seafarers aboard the vessel.

The other 14 Filipino crew members survived and are being assisted with arrangements for repatriation. 

The attack occurred amid continued tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Although President Donald Trump has said the waterway is open, maritime traffic has remained sharply reduced.

Reports said only a handful of vessels were making the passage each day. 

Iran has also reported casualties among its paramilitary forces in the latest round of US attacks, while Iranian authorities said 108 people were wounded.

The Philippine government has ordered assistance for the families of the two Filipino seafarers, including applicable benefits, compensation and insurance proceeds.
