Michael Banks’ decision, announced during an interview with Fox News and later confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security, marks the latest leadership shake-up involving officials overseeing President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The resignation also comes as the administration appears to be reassessing parts of its border and immigration strategy.

“It’s just time,” Banks said, according to the Fox News report. “I feel like I got the ship back on course from the least secure, disastrous, chaotic border to the most secure border this country has ever seen.”

Rodney Scott, commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, thanked Banks for his service “during one of the most challenging periods for border security.”
