U.S. Patriot Missile Stocks in Europe Reach “Beyond Critical” Levels, Officials Say

The US military is facing a severe shortage of advanced missile interceptors in Europe, largely because of demands created by the conflict with Iran, according to US and NATO officials who spoke to The Associated Press (AP).

A US defense official in Europe described the situation as “beyond critical,” while a NATO official confirmed that inventories of Patriot missile interceptors among US and NATO forces in Europe are low.

Both officials spoke anonymously because they were discussing sensitive military matters, The Associated Press (AP) reported.,

The most concerning shortfall involves Patriot interceptors, which are designed to defend against ballistic missiles and other aerial threats.

The shortage highlights the wider strain that the conflict in Iran has placed on US and allied missile-defense inventories.

Some US missile interceptors stationed in Europe have been redeployed to the Middle East, where American and Gulf forces have used air-defense systems to counter Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The depletion of interceptor stocks has raised concerns about NATO's ability to respond to a potential Russian military threat while maintaining adequate defenses in the Middle East.

The issue also underscores a broader challenge for the United States and its allies: missile-defense interceptors are expensive and can take years to manufacture in sufficient quantities, making it difficult to rapidly replenish inventories after sustained combat operations.
