Mikhail Yevgenyevich Gudkov, deputy commander of the Russian Navy, was killed on Wednesday during “combat work” in Russia’s Kursk Region, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Gudkov’s death marks one of the most significant losses for Moscow since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Russian Telegram channels have indicated that the strike was likely carried out using a U.S.-supplied HIMARS missile system. The attack took place just one day before a high-level phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Gudkov, appointed to his role in March, was considered a close ally of Putin. His death is expected to deal a serious blow to the Kremlin’s military leadership.
