UN CHIEF CONGRATULATES BIDEN FOR DEFEATING TRUMP

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres congratulated Democratic candidate Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election and stressed the significance of cooperation between the international body and the US, his spokesman said, Kyodo news agency reported.

Guterres congratulated President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and reaffirmed that the partnership between the US and the UN is "an essential pillar of the international cooperation needed to address the dramatic challenges facing the world," his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The UN chief also congratulated "the American people for a vibrant exercise of democracy in their country's elections," the spokesman added.

Biden has declared victory in the U.S. presidential election that took place last Tuesday and most world leaders have already offered congratulatory messages to the former U.S. vice president, though Republican incumbent Donald Trump has not accepted the result.
