The carrier left San Diego in November 2025 for an Indo-Pacific deployment but was redirected to the Middle East after the United States and Israel began military operations against Iran in late February 2026.

The ship returned after 264 consecutive days at sea without a port call, according to reporting by The Guardian and the U.S. Naval Institute's news service.

The extended deployment brought renewed attention to living conditions aboard the carrier.

Sailors and their families reported shortages of food and basic supplies, plumbing problems, low morale and concerns about mental health.

The Navy confirmed that eight service members from the carrier and its accompanying strike group had attempted suicide during the deployment, according to The Guardian.

The reports prompted calls for greater scrutiny of the conditions experienced by personnel during unusually long deployments.

The carrier's return marked the end of an unusually prolonged mission for its crew and provided an opportunity for thousands of sailors and Marines to reunite with their families.
